CWEA Championships Moves to Two-Weekend Format
Published September 7 2019

The 2019 season wrapped up in March with the largest Championships event in CWEA History! While this was incredibly exciting, the challenges to produce a successful event of this magnitude were numerous. After lengthy discussion at the Spring Membership Meeting and the Summer Board Retreat, the Board of Directors has approved a plan to move the Championships event to a two-weekend format for the 2020 season!

This move marks a major milestone in the development of the organization which has experienced exponential growth over the past five years. While the original plan was to make this move following the 2020 season, the membership expressed concerns at the Spring Meeting that the event was not sustainable within the current format and that a change must be considered immediately. Additionally, Percussion & Winds Groups attending WGI World Championships expressed concern that with the long WGI schedule for the upcoming season, there would be several weekends between Circuit Championships and WGI World Championships with no events.

The 2020 Championships Event will be scheduled as follows:

Color Guard Championships

Saturday, March 21, 2020

Northwestern High School - Novice, Cadet & Regional A Groups
Winthrop Coliseum - Scholastic AAA & Scholastic AA Groups

Sunday, March 22, 2020

Winthrop Coliseum - A, Open & World Groups

Percussion & Winds Championships

Saturday, March 28, 2020

Winthrop Coliseum - All Groups

“This is an exciting time for CWEA!” expressed CWEA President Cody Crawford. “As we continue to grow, this move will allow us to better produce a Championships quality event while ensuring we have enough space to accommodate the increasing size of our membership.”

The change in format will be discussed following the season at the Spring Membership Meeting to decide on whether the new format will continue for subsequent seasons. Additional announcements concerning the 2020 season will be posted within the next few days.
